What did you do before joining Edward Jones?
I worked under a Financial Advisor as a marketing associate at another brokerage firm, then briefly at a major Canadian bank.
How do you feel about working for Edward Jones compared to how you felt about working for other companies?
I know I have made the right decision after this many years. The other companies I worked for had some characteristics that I didn't quite agree with. Plus, some were so big, you felt like a number in a giant organization.
Why was the Edward Jones opportunity appealing to you?
By far and away it was the opportunity to have industry-leading training, coupled with the ongoing support I had in starting my own practice. Just being around other financial advisors that had gone through the training, the sense of volunteerism and not having to compete with any one at my firm really resonated with me. I also knew the investment philosophy of the firm was really directed at serving the needs of the conservative investor, and that's the kind of firm I wanted to work with.
Describe one of your most memorable experiences with a client.
It's really an ongoing experience that is most memorable. Really, it's when a client thanks you for all that you have done because you have solved a problem for them by keeping their best interests at heart. And when my branch office administrator (BOA) and I get invited to a client's for dinner, when they introduce us to a friend or relative or simply sends a Christmas card to us, that's when I know we've made an impact on someone's life. And that's what creates those memorable experiences.
Have you earned any trips as a part of the travel program?
Yes, and they have been more than I could ever ask for. As a father of two young boys, being able to bring them to places where I've never even dreamed about going is really something special. Not only has my family been able to travel the world, but the friends we've made on those trips have lasted for years.
Talk a little about what it's like to build a business.
It's quite difficult. You have to have a tremendous amount of confidence, drive and vision to truly succeed in this business. Just as important is the support that is required at home - there are many long days and hours put in (and this does continue, albeit at a much lesser pace) to build a sustainable business. You face a lot of uphill battles along the way, but it's worth it for you, your clients and your family.
What do you find most satisfying about your career?
I enjoy the freedom and flexibility of being my own boss. This means going to my kids' sports activities when I want, not just when I can. On the business side, it is a great feeling being able to help people who want and need your help. There is a tremendous opportunity for Financial Advisors to help people, with absolutely no limit on how much of an impact you can make on people's lives.
What does it take to be successful at Edward Jones?
It takes a lot of hard work and dedication at the beginning. You have to be willing to put yourself out there and continue along when things may not seem all that good. You have to look at this as a long-term investment in your future. As your business matures, it still takes hard work, but you can then craft it to your own unique preference.
What is it like to work with a BOA?
It's great. My BOA is fantastic at keeping me on track and doing the things that help our branch be successful in the long run. It's important to have good communication in the branch, but also good trust. She knows her role and does it really well, and I know mine.
What is the best thing about your role as an Edward Jones Financial Advisor?
Ultimately it comes down to two things. First, I can help people that genuinely need and want my help and make a positive impact on people's lives. The second is I can create a wonderful lifestyle for my family, which also means we'll be able to reach our goals.
